What is an arc flash analysis?

The Arc Flash Analysis also includes useful recommendations that needs to be complied with, taking the various standards that exist in each country into account. The Arc Flash Analysis makes suggestions on how to minimize or eliminate accidents, and create a practical risk mitigation plan for the company.

An Analysis should contain the following components:

Hazard Assessment

Based on power system parameters, calculations are made to determine the flash protection boundary or the distance from the Arc source from which a person may suffer potential damage. The Hazard Assessment calculates the hazard category and involves the review and collection of technical data.

Documentation

The results of the Arc Flash Hazard Assessment must be documented in reports and drawings. Signs and labels have to be applied to equipment and hazardous areas in order for workers to identify the hazards and take the necessary precautions.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Plan

Wearing the right protective gear is critically important. Based on the hazard category and the potential risk, workers must wear the right protective gear in the correct way. Dress to the numbers to ensure you are adequately covered for any possible risk. Take note that all PPE must always be inspected before use.

Development of procedures to minimize hazards

There are certain procedures that can help minimize risks. These precautionary procedures should be outlined clearly and workers trained on how they should be followed. Safety can be greatly improved with the correct system designs.

Training for workers

All workers who are exposed to arc flash hazards should receive regular training. It is essential to ensure that workers have the right knowledge with regards to the correct PPE and how to use it properly.
